I think it’s safe to say there has been no shortage of eventful things in the news to share but if your Facebook feed is anything like mine it’s flooded with enough articles to last a lifetime so I won’t be talking about politics here. Instead let’s talk dogs!
If you follow me on Instagram you might have read about World Galgo Day and the #FreeTheGalgo campaign on February 1st and the absolutely horrible situation in Spain.
So what is a ‘Galgo’ ? It’s a Spanish Greyhound that has been bred for hunting. These dogs aren’t the hunting dogs you might be used to when you see a well fed, beautifully groomed Labrador retrieving a pheasant during a shoot. These dogs live most of their (short) life in fear.
Whereas a good bird dog in the UK can take years to train and then is highly raised and treated like a king, Galgo’s are starved prior to hunting to make them ‘hungry for prey’ and are typically bred for only one season. This means that each year Spanish hunters kill more than 50,000 Galgos every year after the hunting season is concluded. If a dog hunts poorly, they are tortured as retribution for the shame they reflected upon their owners. Good hunting dogs are “rewarded” by not being violently slain, but by being kept chained up in underground bunkers surrounded by feces.
How this is currently happening and made LEGAL in Spain is astounding – someone once said you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat animals, and that is so true – I would bend over backwards for Kendall. Dogs are amazing, the only thing they want is to be loved and cared for, yet there are thousands of dogs around the world, not only in Spain, that don’t know what a loving home feels like – they live their life in fear and while I wish I could save each and every single one of them, sometimes the best next best is to be an advocate for them. So help spread the word, not just about the treatment of Galgo’s but for all the mistreated and abused animals around you, because at the end of the day we need to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves.
And since we’re on the topic of dogs and sharing love – how about making some homemade dog treats this Valentines Day to spread the happiness and peanut butter goodness. Kendall and I followed along with the February DIY sent straight to our inbox from Wear Wag Repeat and it was so simple and FUN! Kendall was drooling in about 2.5 seconds and after forty minutes of work we had over a 3 dozen healthy treats. After making a stash for Kendall, I followed along with Lucy Loves DIY little goodie bags and made 6 bags full of treats to pass out to follow dog parent neighbours. So give it a go and remember to tag @Kendall_labrador on Instagram so we can see!!
Oh! And while you’re spoiling your four legged friends this Valentine’s Day with homemade treats, don’t forget your partner. I’ve made an easy to shop list for you right here – those biscuits take 15 minutes to cook which is plenty of time to do a little online shopping!!
And for those who are going to ask, my ballet wrap leggings are from Target (shop below) but only available in L & XL currently so I linked a few similar ones that are fully stocked and the aerie ones are currently on sale (and available in six different colours) so hurry!!
